About Burns Hydrophone Systems

Australian-built hydrophones for the people who work at the water's edge

We've been building electronics since 1984 and hydrophones since 1998. Our gear is used by researchers, whale watching operators, engineers, and filmmakers across Australia and internationally — wherever reliable underwater audio matters.

Based in Nelson Bay, Port Stephens

We're not just close to the ocean — we're surrounded by one of Australia's most active cetacean habitats. Humpback whales migrate through Port Stephens each year. Resident bottlenose dolphin pods live in the bay year-round. Building reliable tools for underwater listening isn't just our work, it's part of where we live.

What we do

We design and manufacture robust, low-noise hydrophones, preamps, and towing solutions that help you capture usable underwater audio in real field conditions — not lab conditions. That means durable construction, practical cable lengths, and electronics that work reliably after a day at sea.

Our range covers off-the-shelf systems for whale watching and research, right through to fully custom multi-channel arrays and towed systems for commercial and defence applications. If we don't have something that fits your needs out of the box, we'll build it.

Field-ready, not lab-only

Designed for repeated deployments in salt water, rough conditions, and remote locations.

Direct support

You talk to the people who built the gear. No support tickets, no offshore call centres.

Honest recommendations

We'll tell you the simplest option that works for your use case, even if it costs less.
